Foo Fighters @ Mt. Smart Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand 20/01/2024
Cussing and cigarettes, Jack Black, and 35,000 people’s love for rock and roll—Foo Fighters return to Auckland, New Zealand after six long years.
Riding the success of their 10th studio album, Foo Fighters were forced to delay their late 2022 tour to Australia and New Zealand when drummer Taylor Hawkins suddenly passed earlier in the year. There was some speculation that the band might retire after 25 years, but after a year of grieving (particularly for frontman Dave Grohl, whose mother also died in 2022) Foo Fighters announced that step-in drummer Josh Freese (The Vandals, Devo) would permanently be joining the band.
In what was their first show of 2024, Foo Fighters return exclusively to New Zealand and delight fans with one of their most dynamic performances to date. Although the set was evenly paced, sprinkled with new songs from last year’s studio album Here We Are (2023) and old classics to get everyone out of their seats, an almost 3 hour set was bound to have more than just a couple of highlights.
“Who came out and saw us when we played at that old speedway? That show was so loud it caused a seismic event,” said Grohl, referring to the volcanic-like tremor caused by the stamping feet of thousands of fans at Western Springs in 2011. “When I think about New Zealand, I think about an audience that can trigger an earthquake.”
It wasn’t the only time Grohl expressed his fondness for New Zealand, noting that he always has a great time whenever the band tours. Whilst Grohl shared stories with the crowd, the band teased snippets of songs from multiple artists (Metallica, The Ramones, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails) throughout the set, and even surprised everyone with a special appearance from actor and singer Jack Black for a cover of AC/DC’s Big Balls.
But in amongst the party, there were sombre moments too, like an acoustic stripped back version of My Hero and a tribute for Hawkins that the band perform every night. “This was the first song we wrote together and his favourite,” Grohl told the crowd before performing Aurora. A few times the lights were dimmed and the stadium lit up like stars as the audience held their torches to the sky, providing the perfect atmosphere for the warm summer’s evening soundtrack.
When the crowd weren't swinging their arms in unison over their heads, they were screaming and thrashing their heads at the peak of all the fan favourites, from The Pretender, to Monkey Wrench, to Best of You and their faithful encore Everlong. It's hard not to admire such a resilient act as this band who can seemingly overcome any obstacle thrown their way. Welcome back, legends.

David as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing (the first time he did it, that is!)
David Tennant fans are aware of 2011's brilliant Much Ado About Nothing, in which DT starred as Benedick, alongside Catherine Tate as Beatrice. Filmed at the Wyndham's Theatre in London and directed by Josie Rourke, the production was recorded and offered on Digital Theatre.
But did you know David had played Benedick before?
Yep - he sure has!
It was in 2001, a full decade before his production with Catherine.
Beginning in 1999, BBC Radio 3 launched Shakespeare For The Millennium, an ambitious project to dramatize seventeen Shakespeare productions in four years.
The project was done in collaboration with BBC Worldwide, which emphasized it wanted to take a contemporary, innovative approach to the Bard. It launched on 12 September 1999 with a Shakespeare discussion panel, and a new production of Hamlet -- starring none other than Michael Sheen as the Dane!
On 23 September 2001, BBC Radio 3 broadcast a new production of Much Ado About Nothing as the Sunday Play, with David in the lead role as Benedick and Samantha Spiro as Beatrice. Adapted by Sally Avens, it featured an introduction (as had all the previous productions in the Shakespeare For The Millennium series) by Richard Eyre, the former Director of the Royal National Theatre.
The production also starred a few other recognizable names. There was Chiwetel Ejiofor as Claudio, Emilia Fox as Hero, David Swift as Leonato, Julian Rhind-Tutt as Don John, and David Haig as Dogberry.
All original music was composed and performed by Simon Oakes and Adam Wolters.
Radio listings and announcements, and promo photos of David and Samantha Spiro
Here's a review of the prodcuction!
Much Ado About Nothing was commercially released by BBC Worldwide as part of the BBC Radio collection series in 2001.
The sleeve notes of cassettes and CDs of the production include a scene-by-scene synopsis, a full character analysis, and an essay on interpretation from the director Sally Avens.
Almost four years later, in November 2005, BBC One broadcast a television series called ShakespeaRe-Told, a set of four adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. Each play was adapted by a different writer, and all were relocated to the present day.
The first to be broadcast - on 7 November 2005 - was a modern-day version of Much Ado About Nothing starring Sarah Parrish and Damien Lewis...and Billie Piper and Nina Sosanya and Olivia Colman!
You can watch it here:
youtube
Six days after this television broadcast - on 13 November 2005 at 7:15 pm - BBC Radio 3 re-broadcast the audio version starring David and Samantha in its 'Drama On 3' slot.
Fast forward to August 2020.
The BBC released a set of four BBC Radio Shakespeare collections: Histories, Comedies, Tragedies, and Roman Plays. Much Ado About Nothing was included in the collection of Comedies, and became available as an Audible digital download.
If you want to listen, you can find this collection a lot of places. It might be at your local library or on Overdrive, on Google Play, or as an Amazon Audible book.
Or, ya know, just go here:

Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer in Romeo and Juliet (George Cukor, 1936)
Cast: Norma Shearer, Leslie Howard, John Barrymore, Edna May Oliver, Basil Rathbone, C. Aubrey Smith, Andy Devine, Conway Tearle, Ralph Forbes, Henry Kolker. Screenplay: Talbot Jennings, based on a play by William Shakespeare. Cinematography: William H. Daniels. Art direction: Cedric Gibbons, Frederic Hope, Oliver Messel, Edwin B. Willis. Film editing: Margaret Booth. Music: Herbert Stothart.
If Shakespeare's Juliet could be played, as it was in its first performances, by a boy, then why shouldn't she be played by 34-year-old Norma Shearer? Truth be told, I don't find Shearer's performance that bad: She lightens her voice effectively and her girlish manner never gets too coy. It also helps that William H. Daniels photographs her through filters that soften the signs of aging: She looks maybe five years younger than her actual age, if not the 20 years younger that the play's Juliet is supposed to be. I'm more bothered by the balding 43-year-old Leslie Howard as her Romeo, though he had the theatrical training that makes the verse sound convincing in his delivery. And then there's the 54-year-old John Barrymore as Mercutio, who could be Romeo's fey uncle but not his contemporary. In fact, Barrymore's over-the-top performance almost makes this version of the play a must-see -- we miss him more than we do most Mercutios after his death. Edna May Oliver's turn as Juliet's Nurse is enjoyable, if a bit of a surprise: She usually played eccentric spinsters like Aunt Betsy Trotwood in David Copperfield (George Cukor, 1935) or sour dowagers like Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice (Robert Z. Leonard, 1940). In the play, the Nurse rarely speaks without risqué double-entendres, but most of them have been cut in Talbot Jennings's adaptation, thus avoiding the ridiculous spectacle of Shakespeare being subjected to the Production Code censors. (Somehow the studio managed to slip in Mercutio's line, "the bawdy hand of the dial is now upon the prick of noon.") Some of the other pleasures of the film are camp ones, such as Agnes deMille's choreography for the ball, along with the costume designs by Oliver Messel and Adrian, which evoke early 20th-century illustrators like Walter Crane or Maxfield Parrish. No, this Romeo and Juliet won't do, except as a representation of how Shakespeare's play was seen at a particular time and place: a Hollywood film studio in the heyday of the star system. In that respect, it's invaluable.

SAFIA @ Metropolis Fremantle, Perth, Western Australia 30/08/2019
SAFIA are a three-artist band always aiming for the stars. The cosmic pop trio from Canberra released their second album Story’s Start or End earlier this month and fans have not been left disappointed.
What is described by the band in SMH as a “sonic journey … that is representative of each member’s experience over the past two years”, this album is the perfect follow-up to debut Internal in 2016. It is ethereal sounding, almost inter-galactic. It has themes of love, longing and ambition, but also an underlining darkness, delivered in a way that can be danced or relaxed to.
Vocalist Ben Woolner admits struggling with writer’s block and anxiety while writing this album, but is now celebrated in a headline “Starlight” tour across the country. Accompanied by two Unearthed artists Boo Seeka (a dynamic duo from Newcastle) and Eilish Gilligan (a solo indie-pop queen from Melbourne), it’s the perfect homage to SAFIA’s triple J roots which have blossomed the dreamy, psychedelic hypnotic journey that is Story’s Start or End.
So, the record is great. But are they any good live? Absolutely.
It’s hard to fathom the levels of SAFIA’s music when there are only three people on stage. Each are forced to carry their own; there is nothing to hide behind, not even smoke and lasers and a mesmerising animated backdrop (it does add to the show) can mask the talent that each musician must have to deliver such quality. Woolner is completely in his element in front of a crowd, whether he’s dancing with the front row or singing to the roof through a megaphone. His angelic range is showcased without flaw, only drowned out by the crowd twice during Listen to Soul, Listen to Blues and Embracing Me. He humbly thanked the audience at every interval.
A mini cover of Britney Spears Oops… I Did it Again with the piano and 95 minutes of seamless, flowing melodies and strange, eerie undertones gives fans both old and new a taste of what is currently Australia’s most original and underrated three-piece. With almost every song from the new album appears on the setlist, SAFIA are keeping their shows fresh with their same unique one-of-a-kind genre that captivates anyone who is exposed to it.

Ten Female Characters
Rules: Please list 10 of your favorite female characters from 10 different fandoms and tag 10 people to play.
Tagging: Whoever wants to do it because I’m too lazy to tag. It was hard to just name ten because there are so many of them, but these are the ones that popped into my head (probably because I’ve been watching their shows lately).
Alex Danvers (Supergirl)
Regina Mills (Once Upon A Time)
Ziva David (NCIS)
Lois Lane (Smallville)
Sameen Shaw (Person of Interest)
Olivia Benson (Law & Order: SVU)
Annalise Keating (How to Get Away with Murder)
Jane Rizzoli (Rizzoli & Isles)
Catherine Chandler (Beauty & the Beast)
Alex Parrish (Quantico)
There is a bit of a theme here, and it also makes me realize that apparently I do have a type: dark haired, brown eyed women (who usually carry guns lol)

ok so no one is going to talk about trc being directed by the same woman who brought our stupid shinny volvo owner to life aka twilight (2008)? Cos I am.
